The Mid-Atlantic Wetlands Workgroup (MAWWG) is currently funded through a Wetland Program Development Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region III to Riparia at The Pennsylvania State University.

MAWWG consists of participants representing federal and state regulatory personnel and scientists from the following states: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. This focused membership includes both users and developers of monitoring and assessment tools.

Meetings/workshops are held with development and implementation of wetland monitoring strategies for the Mid-Atlantic region as a broad goal.

Primary Goal

The primary goal of the Mid-Atlantic Wetland Workgroup is to support a forum in which to facilitate the development and implementation of wetland monitoring strategies, including elements of a comprehensive wetland monitoring program, that meet the needs of the mid-Atlantic states (i.e., wetland monitoring programs to be implemented at the state level).

Secondary Goals

  • The technical preparation necessary for improved coordination of surface water and wetland monitoring programs, with the eventual long-term incorporation of wetlands into traditional water quality monitoring programs (e.g., CWA sections 305(b), 303(d), 319, and 106)
  • Regionalization of existing monitoring and assessment tools for wetlands, such as HGM classification, functional assessment and biological assessment
  • Use of monitoring and assessment tools for improved restoration and mitigation
  • Provision of training for regulatory personnel in monitoring and assessment methods
  • Source of information on monitoring and assessment tools, through a workgroup web site
